Pals die after slipping into 200ft ravine.Two British holidaymakers plunged 200ft to their deaths after trying to take a short cut in a French ski resort after a night out drinking.
Richard Ryan, 27, and Chris Lockwood, 28, were found at the bottom of a ravine in an area nicknamed The Edge Of The World in the resort of Les Deux Alpes.
Both had reportedly been “drinking heavily” when they were last seen leaving a bar before making the quarter-mile journey back to their chalet at 2am on Thursday.
It wasn’t until 9am Friday – 31 hours later – that they were reported missing by friends. A helicopter was scrambled and their bodies were found within an hour.
More than seven other people have died in similar circumstances after slipping down the “Black Combe” in the popular resort near Grenoble.
A French police spokesman said that Richard, from York, and Chris, from Leeds, had been trying to take a short cut back to their chalet.
A holidaymaker had told them that the men looked “very tipsy and not quite sure where they were going”.
Chris, a self-employed gas fitter, was engaged to Emma Jackson, 27. They had been due to marry in August. Yesterday devastated Emma was being comforted at Chris’s family home.
Steve Walsh, 55, partner of Chris’s mother Ann, said: “He loved Emma and she loved him to bits. She is in pieces. I’m shocked and stunned.” Yesterday Richard’s parents, Christopher and Angela, who live in York, were too upset to talk.
Meanwhile, the body of 32-year-old British teacher Christopher Hilton was found in France yesterday – seven months after he disappeared.
Mr Hilton, from Stalybridge in Cheshire, was holidaying with his parents at a campsite in Bourg d’Oisans, near Grenoble, when he went missing last July.
His body was found by climbers partially covered in ice and snow on a ledge in the Oisans range of the French Alps.
