Dev and Freida shop for a ring

GOING out with an older lady requires us fellas to be on top of our game at all times.

So here’s a spot of brotherly advice for Slumdog Millionaire star DEV PATEL — only buy your lover gifts that are more expensive than small cars.

This week the actor’s co-star ANIL KAPOOR confirmed that Dev and fellow Slumdog star FREIDA PINTO were dating.

There’s a hefty six-year age gap between the pair and it appears the 18-year-old lad is making some schoolboy errors.

On the most romantic day of the year, did Dev whisk his love off to Paris and shower her with diamonds, as any self-respecting Hollywood hotshot would expect?

No.

He took her to a High Street jeweller’s in one of London’s busiest shopping areas — and left without buying anything.

Oh dear.

Valentine’s Day saw the couple browsing in H. Samuel’s on Oxford Street. Now, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with their goods, because there isn’t.

But splashing a bit of cash never hurt the first flushes of a new relationship.
Readies

And with a multi-award winning worldwide smash-hit film under his belt, Dev certainly now has a few readies at his disposal.



An onlooker said: “Dev and Frieda seemed completely smitten with each other. They spent 15 minutes in the jeweller’s and were quite happy to sign autographs and talk to fans.

“They paid particular attention to one of the cabinets which was full of the more expensive rings stocked by the store chain.

“They didn’t buy anything in the end, but they certainly spent plenty of time studying the range.”

The age gap apparently initially proved uncomfortable for Freida.

Dev said: “She told me after our first audition that she felt like a bit of a paedophile because we had to do this love scene and she was like 23 and I was 17 at the time. So it was pretty weird for her.”

Freida must have to pinch herself on a regular basis these days.

She found herself rubbing shoulders with Best Actress nominee KATE WINSLET at a pre-Academy Awards bash in LA.

And not far away at another party ahead of the Oscars, co-star DEV added SIENNA MILLER to the long list of A-listers he has met, including SHARON STONE and ANGELINA JOLIE.

Dev and Sienna spent the evening hanging out with ELTON JOHN and his partner DAVID FURNISH.
