Oscar Nominations 2009: Kate Winslet may have "blown her chances" with Angelina Jolie gaffe

/ On : jueves, enero 29, 2009/
Kate Winslet may have "blown her chances" of an Oscar by forgetting Angelina Jolie's name at the Golden Globes, according to veteran film critic Barry Norman.

The actress embarrassingly referred to Jolie as "the other one" when she reeled off a list of her fellow nominees in the best actress category.

Norman, the BBC's film critic for 26 years, said that the faux pas would not go down well with Academy voters in Hollywood.

Discussing the best actress Oscar, Norman said: "I really, really hope that Kate Winslet gets it. I think they are all good performances but I think hers is the best.

"But I have a nasty feeling that she has blown her chances with that silly, silly speech at the Golden Globes."

While she was honoured by her peers at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the "5,000 or so Oscar voters, most of whom are American", might not be so kind, Norman said.

He told ITV1 show Loose Women: "When push comes to shove, Americans will vote for the local boy or local girl rather than the foreigner in normal circumstances. It doesn't always work out like that, but I think in this case -'Who's the other one? Who's the other one?' - she forgot Angelina Jolie's name, and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are the king and queen of Hollywood.

"I have a feeling, and I hope I'm wrong, that enough voters will have been offended by this - unintentional though it was, because I know Kate well and she's a lovely girl, she really is a nice person and the insult was unintentional - but it could work against her and she might lose out for that reason."

Winslet made the gaffe when she beat Jolie, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Kristin Scott Thomas to the best actress award for Revolutionary Road.

"I'm so sorry Anne, Meryl, Kristin - oh god, who's the other one... Angelina!" she gasped.

Norman said of the flustered speech: "I think she was tired and emotional. She had already won the best supporting actress award and I suspect quite rightly and understandably she went off with [husband] Sam Mendes, had a couple of glasses of champagne and then to her astonishment was named best actress as well, it just took her aback and she did this rather daft speech."

Winslet remains favourite to win the best actress Oscar for her other film, The Reader, on February 22. However, bookmakers have shortened the odds on rival Meryl Streep winning for Roman Catholic drama Doubt.
